Description
Cornice Blast.
A few years back I was out skiing at Snowbird Ski Resort in Salt Lake City and we had a tremendous amount of snow the day that we arrived at the resort.
The first night that we were there we were blasted out of our sleep from a constant of shells from their howitzers knocking down possible avalanches.
The first full day we were there half the mountain was closed due to avalanche threats. As the week progressed they opened more and more of the mountain. On the third day that we were there they opened the whole mountain.
On the first chair of the day for us as we made our way to the top of the resort we unloaded and I noticed that there was a large group of people just hanging out at the top of the mountain. This is not a common occurrence at a ski resort as most folks are active and want to get moving.
Being curious I started asking around as to why everyone was hanging out. I was told that the ski patrol was getting ready to set of charges to knock down a cornice before it slid down uncontrollably. This seemed to be a once in a lifetime opportunity to catch an avalanche so we waited around. I captured a series and have published a few from this series previously but purposely left this one out as to allow people to use their imagination as to the start of the avalanche. Now you know the rest of the story.

Right place at the right time is always so much better when you have a camera! Great capture.

A blast of a winter photograph with great light and shadows, perspective, and composition!
