Description
Isleton Bridge,
Isleton is a small town located in what is known as the Sacramento River Delta. Most of the delta region is at or below sea level and divided into man made islands protected by levees. These islands are very fertile and make for a very favorable place to grow crops.
The islands are separated by many sloughs. The sloughs offer excellent fishing for striped bass, catfish, salmon, and many other species.
I was traveling through Isleton to another small delta town and had to cross the Isleton Bridge. As I approached the bridge, I was struck by how the light lit up the span with passing storm clouds in the near distance.
Isleton's claim to fame at one time was the Isleton Crawdad Festival. This festival would bring in a couple of thousand people to this sleepy little delta town of roughly 800 people.
The bridge itself is a draw bridge spanning a channel on the Sacramento River. The overall length of the bridge is 624 feet with the longest span at 226 feet. The bridge was designed by Joeseph Strauss.
