Description
The Pt Reyes National Seashore area was first inhabited by the Miwok Indians nearly 5,000 years ago. The first European settler to explore the area was Sir Francis Drake in 1579.
The lighthouse at Pt Reyes was first assigned to the area. Construction was delayed for 15 years due to a dispute between the landowners and the United States Lighthouse board. Electricity first came to the lighthouse in 1838 and the stairs were installed in 1839.
There are 308 stairs that lead down to the lighthouse and the lighthouse is 37 feet above the ground. The Point Reyes Lighthouse is the windiest and foggiest on the west coast. The station is often blanketed by week long periods of fog and it is not uncommon and very few years go past that winds are not recorded above the 75 mile an hour mark.
This particular overlook is also very popular with whale watchers. during the spring time whales are spotted migrating from their winter homes in Mexico and Central America to their summer home off the shores in Alaska. During the late fall the pattern repeats itself in reverse.
Pt. Reyes National Seashore and the Pt Reyes lighthouse are located in Northern Marin County roughly 30 miles north of San Francisco.
In 1956 the area was recommended for immediate acquisition and became part of the National Seashore system in 1962. The local ranchers lost their ownership of the land but were able to lease their land back from the government.
