Description
Wildcat falls is a small waterfall located off of highway 140 in Yosemite National Park. The fall is relatively unknown as the lower portion of the falls is tucked in behind some trees and because there are not any formal hiking trails leading up to it.
Some sources have this fall listed at 630 feet and other sources have it at 720 feet. The longest single drop for this waterfall is 120 feet.
Wildcat Falls is a seasonal waterfall normally drying up in mid summer.
The physical details of this waterfall not impresive by Yosemite standards would constitute a major waterfall in many other places. The beauty of this fall comes partially from the fact that it is overshadowed by many of the larger waterfalls in Yosemite National Park. There are times when you can sit at the base of this waterfall and not see another visitor for very long periods of time. I've visited this waterfall at least half a dozen times and I only recall seeing one other small group during any of those other visits. As a matter of fact, I've seen more deer back here than I have seen people.
For photography it is best to get here early in the morning or later in the afternoon when the sun is hidden by the grand walls of Yosemite valley. This will allow a nice even light dispersed over the falls. This particular image was taken as a black and white in the JPEG format and is not a digital conversion to black and white. The Olympus camera I used to capture this image does an amazing job that I feel is unequalled by digital software.
