Description
The Transamerica Pyramid has been an iconic building ever sine I was a young boy. I recall seeing it on television during a golf tournament sponsored by I believe the Trans America co.
At the time of completion this building was the fifth tallest in the world and the tallest west of the Mississippi River. This lasted until 1974 when the Aon Center was completed in Los Angeles.
I've seen many photographs of this building but I wanted to do something different here. I aligned one of the vertical walls with the edge of my view finder to enhance the look of the angles of the opposite wall. This creates multiple triangles in the image.
One of the wings on the side of the tower was designed to support the elevator shaft and a stairwell. The wing on the other side was designed as a smoke evacuation tower for fire fighting
There is no observation deck in the building and there is no access to the roof for visitors. They do have 4 digital cameras that feed live video to a virtual observation room in the lobby. A few of the raw statistics of the building are as follows:
The building is 850 feet tall and has 48 floors of retail and office space.
Construction began in 1969 and it was finished in 1972.
The four story base of the building has more than 300 miles of steel rebar in it.
