Description

The Golden Gate Bridge is the most photographed bridge in the world. It's easy to understand why. The bridge itself is a beautiful piece of architectural art work and the setting is incredible.
Although it may appear different, this image was taken on a cold (53 degree) winter day in San Francisco.
The Golden Gate Bridge spans the Golden Gate, the space between the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay. It is recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the modern world by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
The chief engineer in charge of the construction was Joseph Strauss. Strauss's original design called for two cantalevered sections on both ends of the bridge with one central tower. The final graceful suspension bridge design came from Manhattan Bridge designer Leon Moisseiff.
Construction of the bridge began in 1933 and cost 35 million dollors. The bridge was completed in 1937 and was 1.3 million under budget.
The Golden Gate Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world at 4200 ft until 1964. It has since been surpassed many times over.
The bridge was originally painted with a red lead primer and a red lead based top coat. Since 1990 an acrylic top coat has been used in an effort to improve air quality and is maintained by a crew of 38 painters.
The last construction bond for the bridge was retired in 1971 with 35 million in principal and 39 million in interest.
With all of the hard facts out of the way I will say that one of the reasons I am fascinated with the bridge is that you can visit it over and over again and it never seems to have the same appearance.
