Description
The Stellar Jay.
I remember the firsst time I saw the stellar jay as I thought that it was a regular blue jay never had seen either before moving to California in my early 20's. They are indded related but what I learned later was that the Stellar Jay has a black head and a regular Blue jay has a white and blue head.
This image was captured in Yosemite Valley as he was flying around keeping an eye on what appeared to be his mate, a much heavier bird that appeared to be carrying a number of eggs in her. They seemed to be on a nest nbuilding mission with the female doing most of the work.
The stellar jays that I have come across seem to be fairly well adjusted to paople as they often will land on the same pic nic table where on is eating, waiting for scraps of food to fall. They seem to be scavengers for anything people drop. I even had one land on my finger and eat out of my hand up at a popular tourist attraction in Southern Oregon.
They appear to be a proud species and rather good looking.

Great capture, Bill (even if they are my arch nemesis this time of year as they try to nest on everything protruding from my house 😂 😂 😂 )
