Description
This is one of my favorite color photographs that I have captured in Yosemite Valley. Yes you read that correctly, color photograph.
Sometimes I will drive up to the valley in the winter and meet with friends. One sleeps in a heated tent, another sleeps in a motor home and I sleep in the back my Jeep Grand Cherokee.
This was captured in February right in the middle of winter. I drove up the day before and it was raining in the Central Valley so I knew that I was probably in for some weather. On the way into Yosemite Valley the temperatures cooled and I was driving in a heavy slush that eased as I entered the park. We spent the afternoon shooting the valley but I wasn't really inspired by anything. After we ate I drove to the camp and set up in the back of the Jeep for the night.
Sometime during the night the weather cooled and another storm moved in.
I woke to a good foot of snow covering the Jeep and I thought I would be in for a real treat that day. I was really hoping that the clouds would clear so I could get some good open landscapes of the snow in the valley. That never happened so I made some adjustments to my thinking. I found this oak standing by itself in one of the meadows and just had to stop and work with it. The snow and the overhead clouds muted out most of the color but the shades and tones in this image were just outstanding. If you look very close you will see some brown limbs on the trees to the left.
