Description
Petaluma is located in Southern Sonoma County just north of Marin County. Since the early days Petaluma has been primarily an agricultural city although the products have shifted over time. In the earlier days Petaluma's main name to fame was the egg industry and the Petaluma River was key to getting the product to market.
San Francisco was a growing fast during the gold rush days and the residents needed food. The Petaluma area was then known as the poultry capitol of Northern California. The easiest way of getting the eggs to market was by sending them down on barges through the Petaluma River. From there they would cross the San Pablo Bay and end up over in San Francisco.
Now many of the chicken coops have fallen or are falling down. There are still a number of poultry farms in the area but they are giving way to dairy farms and vineyards.
I lived in Petaluma for a number of years and my oldest daughter was born there. Our rented home was a converted chicken coop. I wasn't into photography back in those days and didn't really appreciate the beauty of the surrounding area. In order to get this shot I had to wake up an hour before sunrise and drive 45 minutes just to get in position to get this shot.
