Half Dome is one of the most famous landmarks located in Yosemite National Park and may be one of the most famous American landmarks. Half Dome rises over 4700 feet from the floor of Yosemite Valley.
Once thought to be an unsummitable mountain it was summited for the first time in 1875 by George G Anderson. THis was accomplished by drilling and placing iron eye bolts into it's granite surface.
Now days thousands of hikers summit the top of this mountain peak every year. They do this by hiking 8.5 miles from the valley floor climbing hundreds of granite steps, finally makeing the way the final part by pulling themselves up the steel cables that were originally installed in 1919.
Half Dome is also where the first class 5 climb was first accomplished in the United States. This original climb took 5 days. Today many climbers free climb this route in as little as a few hours.
