Description
Forbes Island.
Built by Forbes Kiddo. Some people mistake it for something created by Malcolm Forbes.
This island now sits tied up in San Francisco at Pier 39 and has been turned into a restaurant. It's history is a little far reaching and to follow is just a brief synopsis.
Construction began in 1975 when Forbes poured 288 tons of buoyant concrete to form the hull of the island. The Island was formally launched 5 years later in 1980.
The island has breathtaking views of the city, Has palm and date trees panted on it, submerged 15 room retreat, four baths, sunken dining room, 19 foot bar, wine cellar, air lock escape hatch, sewage treatment plant, and a 60,000 gallon water tank on the premise.
The Island was moored in the San Francisco Bay near the small town of Sausalito. There was a long legal battle with the Island that had the Island moving all over the San Francisco Bay for a period of time before it was finally sold and turned into the restaurant.
