Description
Yerba Buena Lighthouse.
The Yerba Buena Lighthouse was built and completed in 1875. The light sits on the south end of the Island and warns boats and ships away from the rocky island on foggy days and nights.
The light is still in operation today although automated now. The keepers house now is kept by a Coast Guard Admiral.
The lighthouse is octagonal in shape sitting on a concrete foundation and the light tower is short when compared to other lighthouses at only 25 ft. tall.
To the east of the light you have the East Bay cities of Berkeley, Emeryville, and Oakland. To the west you have San Francisco. The island was connected by the Bay Bridge in 1933.
