Description
Racing Balloons.
I'm not exactly sure why they call the Reno Balloon Race a race at all. It seemed that nobody was in a real hurry to get off the ground. Once off the ground I didn't see anyway to race these things or a course to race on. It seemed as if they were just floating up and down and around, looking for different currents to float on.
Note that I'm not criticizing this. It was and is a beautiful event. A beautiful event even if I had to wake up at 2 in the morning get dresses and drive 3 hours to Reno to see this amazing spectacle. The start out with a morning burn with several balloons tethered to the ground but floating in the are as they took turns lighting off their burners, sometimes in sequence and sometimes in unison turning the morning sky into a bright and colorful event.
Once this was completed over 100 balloons were laid out on the field and inflated. The pilots would release them from the earths grasp as they inflated.
