Description
Yosemite National Park to me is truly a magical place. I've been going up to Yosemite every year ever since I moved to California in 1980. But it wasn't until the mid 90's when I first experienced Yosemite during the winter.
The first time up there during the winter we encountered rain all the way into the valley. My family and I were somewhat disappointed as we were really hoping for snow. We checked into the hotel and had a room on the top floor.
I slept restlessly that night as I heard the rain hitting the roof above me. Finally around four in the morning the sound stopped and everything was silent.
I slept a little while longer. When I awoke at sunrise I walked over to the window to look out. Sure enough, the reason I didn't hear the rain hitting the roof any longer was because it had turned into snow.
The look on my kids face was pure joy.
Fast forward 15 years. I was winter camping with friends in the valley. A large storm dumped 18 inches of snow on the valley. The park was near empty as travel to the valley was treacherous. It was as if I had the park all to myself. Glancing at this image quickly you might think that it is a black and white. Look closely and you will see subtle shades of green underneath the heavy snow.
