Description
Emigrant Gap.
Emigrant Gap is a gap in the Sierras just past Donner Summit. It got it's name during the gold rush days where emigrants lowered their wagons by rope down the mountain to cross the American and Bear River drainage.
Now days it's just a beautiful spot along highway 80.
I drive through Donner Pass and Emigrant gap roughly a dozen times a year. Many times I just drive on through. It all depends on the time of day and where the sun is and how big of a hurry I am to get home.
I captured this one on my way back from a day skiing. I knew that by the time I was done skiing and made my way down the mountain I would probably hit this area right around sunset.
This area has easy access as there is a scenic turnoff right on Highway with plenty of parking. It's also a great place to stop and stretch your legs after a long day skiing.
