Description
Spring time in Yosemite is a magical time where the Sierras come back to life after a harsh winter. The major waterfalls that never completely freeze now start flowing hard showering all who try to get up near the bottom of the falls. The snow in the high country melts faster as the sun rises and you can see a noticeable difference in the strength of the waterfalls from the morning flow and the mid afternoon flow.
If there is any snow in the valley it melts and disappears into the small creeks, streams, and river that flows through the valley. The wildlife becomes more active. It's always easy to spot some squirrels and stellar jays move about looking for scraps and left-overs, the deer move through the valley and you just might spot a bobcat, bear, or mountain lion.
The Merced flows strong and hard and throughout the valley the dogwoods blossom. Most of the dogwoods in Yosemite have a very nice white blossom, there are a few pink dogwoods near the housing units for the park service employees. The dogwoods along the river seem to bring the most attention as nature lovers and photographers will gather around them for the perfect angle.
In this image I captured the blossoming dogwood near the Stoneman Bridge on the way into the valley. Shooting down from the riverbank allowed me to capture this near perfect blossom against the background of the flowing Merced River. I was lucky to create this image when I did as I drove past roughly 20 minutes later and there had to be a half dozen photographers trying for the right angle.
