Description
Come Sit and Stay. This is one of my favorite images that I've ever taken and once you know the backstory behind this you might just understand the mood and why I like it so much.
With much anticipation my family and I headed out to the ocean for a long weekend camping over the Independence Day Holiday. Mid-summer at the beach, we're thinking warm weather, sunny days at the beach. It couldn't have been any colder all weekend long.
We left Vacaville with temps in the mid 90's. By the time we got to the beach they were barely pushing 60. We set up camp and hoped that the sun would break through. It's a good thing that we sent the children out for firewood because it never warmed up all day.
Night fell and as the evening wore on we let the fire die and prepared our bedding in the tents.
Asleep in the night for a couple of hours and I awake to the winds blowing on the tent. The noise from the winds blowing on the tent increased as did the wind when I realized I was not going to get anymore sleep that night.
We basically repeated the same pattern the following day and so did the weather pattern. After two restless nights I decided to get out of the tent and see if I could catch a sunrise. No such luck.
I walked out towards the beach and came across this bench hidden on the tall beach grass. The empty bench, the fog, the tall grass, the waves crashing in the distance, all seemed to reflect the empty feeling that had come over me on this summer morning.
We left the ocean a day early and found nice warm summer weather 70 miles inland.
NOTE: this image has been updated on 6/27/22 as I favor the current, slightly lighter version.

Great find and capture! The tall grass overgrowing the bench really adds to the somber atmosphere.
