Description
Yosemite in the winter time is magical if you can stand a little cold. Clouds move in and out of the valley without warning. They can bring snow or rain or both depending on how cold the storm front is.
If your up there in the middle of the winter you might catch some bucks squaring off to show thier dominance. To the victor goes the spoils and they are able mate with the girls to ensure the continuation of thier herd.
This image was captured as a storm was clearing from the valley and the clouds released thier grip on Half Dome.
From the valley, Half Dome appears to be a round dome missing half from the valley side. In reality Half dome is a fairly slim monolith not at all round, the backside is almost as steep as the front it just hasn't had a chunk of it removed through glacial movement.
From the valley floor Half Dome rises 4,737 feet. The summit of this rock was conquered by George G. Anderson in October 1875. This was accomplished by drilling and placing iron eyebolts into the side of the granite walls.
Today, the peak is ascended in a number of ways. Thousands of hikers make the climb along the cable route that the National Park System has now required permits for to help improve sagety by keeping traffic along the route to a minimum.
In 1957 the first route up the vertical face of the dome was completed by Royal Robbins, Mike Sherrick, and Jerry Gallwas today known as the Regular Northwest Face. This route took them 5 days. Now this route is free climbed some expert climbers in a number of hours.
