Description
40 Mile Point Lighthouse
The 40 Mile Point Lighthouse was authorized by congress back in 1893. The property the light was built on was 22 acers in size and only cost $200.00 when purchased. The lighthouse get's it's name from being roughly 40 miles south of Mackinaw Point on Lake Huron.
The lighthouse was completed at the end of 1896but wasn't lit until it was manned and ready during the spring of the following year. It's unclear when the lighthouse was retired so to speak but at one point the ownership of the house was transferred to the Coast Guard. The light was put on the National Register of Historical places in 1984.
